Still Life



I posed the veggies with a basket and took a photo to work from. I wove the basket using raffia and strips of fabric twisted together. The veggies were all stuffed trapunto style before the quilting was done. I used my hand dyed fabrics augmented with Prismacolor pencils to add shadows and contours.
I wasn't really sure what was meant by 'crop three sides'. Did I get it right?

I would love your great suggestions...

You have wonderful texture. That basket is wonderful, and the squash looks good enough to eat.

The only thing I see cropped here is the table, which I would consider "negative space".

What if the Basket was a bit larger (or the quilt a bit smaller) so that you couldn't see the top or left edges. What if one of the zucchinis was forward more in the picture so that you couldn't see it's bottom edge. That's what was meant by "cropped". But it's still a wonderful quilt cropped or not.

Hi Cherie - Another appealing work. Your use of color is good as usual. I particularly like the way you did the basket.

I saved your picture into Picasa and recropped it using Linda's suggestion. It is surprising how much pizzazz can be added by cropping out part of the basket.

I like this quilt a lot, especially the basket. It is done so well that the veggies almost pale in comparison. (But they are nice too) I'd like to see you do another quilt just like it using only the basket....or even a postcard with just a section of a basket woven in the same way. In my opinion, your technique has enough interest that nothing else is needed. Nice job. Valerie

I agree with everyone else--great texture and quilting. Wonderful fabric choices--they really capture the vegetables. More cropping would look great, although I'd be nervous to cut into that basket.
