Sol's Glory

19"x17"

I tried a few things on this quilt I have not done
before. I started with tissue paper sundyeing for the background of the sky and water, used a combination of polyfill and dryer lint for clouds and used organdy overlays on both sky and water and mountains. I used expanding paint, micro beads, mica dust, tiny seashells and polished pebbles for the sandy beach, and a sheet of mica from some angel wing mica I found in the hills of North Dakota.

This was really up my alley as I love trying things not normaly used with fabric quilts. I would appreciate any comments and or critiques...

I love this piece! Isn't it funny that we did the same theme (seashore) and got such different looks? I love the sky and your shoreline..how did you do that with dryer lint? It seems to blend right in, like it is fabric. What is tissue paper sundyeing? I wouldn't change anything about this, I really like the way you did the bottom edge. I have to try using different shapes on my edges, it looks great!

Thanks Cathy...Yes, I got a chuckle that we had such similar themes...even the placement of water and land in the same position! Too funny.
The dryer lint is captured between the base fabric and organza and quilted in place. The sun dyeing (I guess I should call it sun painting) was my first attempt . You paint very wet (white) fabric with pebeo translucent paint mixed 50/50 with water and while wet position pieces/strips of bleeding tissue paper then place in sun to dry. The colors bleed into the paint and are dyed onto the fabric in the shapes placed. Fun!

I love both of the beach pieces and it's interesting to see how 2 different people interpreted basically the same scene. Hmmmmm....an idea for a future monthly challenge in there somewhere?

A question on the translucent paint though. I have the transparent paint used for sun printing, but can't find any on-line references to a translucent. Do you use a specific color of paint or is it more like a medium, which is basically a carrier for whatever else you use for the coloration?

I'm off to Michael's today anyway so I'll look around at their Pebeo stock.

Hi Delta...Of course I meant transparent paint...duh! Don't know why I get these terms mixed? I just used the primary's and mixed the colors for my "sun PRINTING".

Hi Cheri--
I'm in awe of your piece. I saved dryer lint for a long time but finally threw it away when I never found a use for it.

Hi Cheri,
This is a lovely piece. I think the quilting and edge treatment are especially successful for the unity of the piece. Have you thought about adding some white highlights in the clouds? It might make for a bit of contrast in the sky and fits with a bright sunny day.

Hi Cheri - Your color combinations in the sky are very attractive to me. Actually all the colors fit your ocean theme so well. I like the way you combined a variety of materials to create such a nice piece. The uneven bottom edge is nicely done and adds to the ocean effect. Nice work.
