Lava Flow by Joni Feddersen

What fun I had on this challenge! I closed my eyes and saw lava seeping out of a charred cracking earthy crust. You could smell the smoke and feel the heat. You can't see the fire, but it is eminent. This piece is 16.5 x 13 and is heavily quilted to attempt a flowing bubbly feeling. I almost burnt my hands on this one. Comments appreciated.

Wonderful color and fabric choices. The black background seems like the already hardened lava with new flow on top. Sure wish I could touch it to warm my hands right now! Great job!

What a good job you did of making a lava flow. It How did you do the crackled area? Was the fabric printed like that or is this your threadwork?

Ann, Thank you for your comments. The crackled area fabric was printed that way, and I added threadwork on top.

Very nice effect of 'heat' and 'flow'!

I think this is very special. you have done a great job. you must have been so excited to find that fabric in your stash! you have done well with the rest of it, but those sections helps the viewer be confident about what they think they see.

did you buy the fabric originally with something like this in mind?

Hi Joni - You did a great job choosing your fabrics for this piece. The orange fabric with the yellow lines in it adds another element of flow and the blackish background really works. Super.

Nice job, Joni!
I studied that lava flow for quite awhile, it is very, very effective, and the 'heat' rising from that red hot lava!
Very well done, a nice example of really looking at the fabric and using its elemnts.

Hi Joni,
Boy, this one really is HOT! I really like what you have done with the composition, the diagonal movement is really effective. As others mentioned, that crackly fabric is just perfect; don't you love when you find something really unique like that, and then actually get to use it effectively? Great job.
