Galveston 2005

I started with the seagull feathers I picked up on the beach in Galveston when we went to IQA in 2005. I used a photo I took there, printed on fabric fused to wonder-under (which worked beautifully!) and extended the sand and the sky with pieces of color catchers from my washing machine that matched. Then I added light blue tulle fused with misty fuse in several triangular layers over the body and the border, and did a little quilting and a little machine embroidery. My favorite is the feather stitch used on the real feathers. Maybe you had to be there.

Size is 10 1/2" x 14 1/2"

Katie, I love the wistful look of this. I like how you have integrated the various elements: The quilting lines extend through the photo, the background and the frame, the colors are repeated. Finally, I like that you used a feather stitch to echo the feather.

What a serene beautiful scene. The feather stitching on the feathers is perfect and the picture tells it all.

I really like the picture within a picture - makes me feel as though I can walk right in.

This is so-o-o-o pretty. I love it!
Anything seaside sings to me, and I am a collector of feathers, picking them up wherever I find them.
Very well done.

Katie, feathers floating in the air always make me think of that delightful ending scene in Forest Gump, where his feather just drifts off into the breeze. That's what came to mind when I looked at yhour qiult. Just such a nice peaceful scene!

Katie, this is a lovely piece! I wouldn't have expected an image so meditative to be achievable from recycled materials, but it is filled with that quality. This is an impressive piece of work!
