Heron on the Creek

I just uploaded two photos. One is a photo of my creek at sunset, the inspiration for my challenge piece, Heron. Using the tiling option on the printer, I printed a digital photo of a heron near my pier. I added abstract curved lines to the image. The grasses and curved lines are reverse applique with an underlayer of batting for relief. Trapunto technique was used on the heron. Layers of fused scraps were added for the grasses. Ribbon was couched on two of the curved lines. Light strokes of oil pastel were used to complete the highlights. I would welcome any comments as this is my second attempt. Its great to explore new technique with these challenges, however, I need to know am I going in the right direction.

I think it's lovely! You've definitely captured the sunset colors and the curved lines give a feeling of movement by the grasses/trees/other plants upward. Very nice indeed.

Jane, the colors are perfect, and I particularly like the batiks (?) used for the grasses. Very nice. What did you use for the straighter vertical lines in the background (in the photo it appears to be a purple?

I love the curved lines and the heron is beautiful. Right not the composition is pretty symmetrical. I wonder what would happen if you cropped out maybe 1/6 of the quilt from the right hand side. Would it bring a bit more focus to the heron without getting rid of the beautiful undulating lines? Beautiful.

The photo initially caught my eye. I have one almost just like it of a sunset on a pond here in Maine. I really like what you did with the heron and all the colors.

Great job Jane. Love the color. Was your background hand dyed?

Jane this is really a gorgeous piece. The addition of the vertical curved lines really keeps ones eyes moving into the scene. Great work.

I love love the colors you chose - the curves go so nicely with your palette. I like the composition of the piece and it keeps drawing my eye back to it! Great job!

Really beautiful piece! I love you how carry all the colors of the batik throughout the "painting" (or vice-versa?). It's so graceful, and the mix of realism and abstraction is really intriguing.

I like how you used the photo for the background. The heron is wonderful. The only suggestion would be to have used different fabrics for the swirls. Or to use put the pinks in the same place on the upper left corner to follow what was done with the right side.

Jane this is beautiful, I love that you took the colors to a saturated more vivid dimension. The touch of the abstract really enhances the piece as well. Nice Job!

Hi Jane - Love it - love everything about it - even the pink. The heron is just right on. Too good.
