Please Don't Take Me For GRANITE

This is my take on a Tafoni Granite weathering structure in Idaho.

I used only my handyed fabrics, and satin sitched every piece onto the batting. I intend to do a lot of quilting after facing the edges, and backing, using the pillow case method.
I will have to wait a while to do it though, as my therapist told me I was 'pushing it' too hard too soon :-(
I would love critiques and suggestions for quilting...Should I quilt the rocks (they are already quilted in outline with the black). I will definitely quilt the sand and sky.
It measures 22"x291/2".
This was really challenge and a stretch for me Kathy...LOL I tend to work most of the time as close to the real colors as I can get. It was so much fun once I abandoned myself to playing with colors. Thank you Kathy!

Here is the quilted and finished piece! What do you think, does it make a difference?

Cherie, your hand dyes are gorgeous and your use of them is great. I also like the wonderful contrast with the gold. I'd quilt the granite as well as the background if it were mine. Chris Predd

Thank you Chris...that's my feeling as well. Just seems a little intimidating with so MANY little sections :-O

Hi Cherie...I just had a look at your other piece as well.. both are very well done. I especially like this one, the hand-dyes are really effective. I am very impressed with you satin stitching each piece right on to the batting. And the black was the right thing. Did you work from a drawing/poster?
If it were mine, I would definitely quilt the rocks... probably with something irregular, but I think as time goes by, it will speak to you in that way.
Vary well done!

Oops... I wanted to say... being fond of yellow, I like your sky.

I especially love the black outlining. Looks a bit like Esterita Austin's color and style. Well done! I would also quilt the entire thing.

Carole, yes I worked from a photo. I will try to add it to my post.I'm so happy the black outlining worked...it took hours to do!

This is lovely! The rock colors are from a painted desert and your sky makes it look even warmer there. Great job!

Great piece Cherie, the fabrics are perfect, the contrast of the lights and shadows is fantastic I am mesmerized by your piece. The colors are wonderful and really do a great job of portraying your subject.

I love the colors you chose, and the yellow sky really works with the red violet. I a happy that you have discovered how much fun you can have when you give yourself permission to not try to totally recreate a photo. I had an instructor who gave us (his students) permission to leave things out when we were creating an illustration. Such a simple comment but it has been so freeing. I have no suggestions about the work itself, as to quilting, I would use different threads and textures for the sky vs the ground vs the rocks, and yes I think I would quilt the most of the rocks, but maybe not all of them. Be sure to post another picture when you finish the quilting.

Great piece, Cherie. Your quilting should be anything that increases the feeling of texture to the rocks, like circles or?

Wonderful piece. I love lines created by your satin stitching and the yellow sky is terrific. As for quilting the rocks, that is a tough one. Too much quilting will distract from the wonderful shading your hand dyes create. I would suggest using a monofilament thread and following one of the edges of the rock to emphasize each individual shape. Just a thought. It also occurs to me that once you get the sky and foreground quilted, you may enjoy the effect of leaving the rest as is.

Cheri, I love your fantastic use of color in this piece! Your hand dyed fabric is really showing off, and really makes this piece exceptional. Your quilting will only make it all even better. What about using thread color similar to the fabric you are quilting, as to just add texture. Could be a lot of work, but well worth the effort. Great Job!

I really like the dimensionality of this piece. If it were mine, I would quilt the rocks mainly to get some shading in there. Great job!

great piece. I love your interpretation of the photo...You have all the elements that give it depth and form. Very good compositonal flow. The composition is complex already, you might consider very simple quilting in the sky and sand so as to not comflict with the rocks. Maybe the same thread color as your beautiful fabrics?
