TRIO

The quilt measures 39" x 19".

I have been messing around painting cheesecloth and decided to use it in this challenge. I started with a piece of light/neutral linen. I fused three bronzy silk squares to the linen. Then I layered painted cheesecloth which was cut into squares and quilted each down in a loose grid pattern. I wanted the effect of a mat over the whole thing with three holes cut out. I used reverse applique to achieve this effect. By using reverse applique I have no seams in the black area which I think makes the quilting look smoother and seamless. I used a pebble pattern to counterbalance the squares. The final step was to add a small flange (piping) inside the binding. I was not sure how much I liked the piece until I was done. It is very textural. Veronica Von Zwehl

I really love the texture of this piece and the movement from the overlaps. Good job!

I've only made my quilt in my head for this challenge, but it is very similar to your idea! I'll go ahead and do it anyway and see what the differences are. Your overdyed cheesecloth is perfect for this piece. The only qualm I have is that I know you made the top and bottom margins unsymmetical on purpose, but I feel they are too unbalanced. Obviously you're not changing them now though. Overall a great response to the challenge (and finished early!)

Nancy: I totally agree with you about the top and bottom being out of balance. I only noticed it when the binding was on. I can't wait to see your quilt.

Veronica.... I really like the interplay of color and geometric shape with this. Fabulous idea to use the dyed cheesecloth for some great shading. I agree about the asymmetric borders.... I think I would have kept the squares in the center or really exaggerated the asymmetry more.... maybe even placing the colored squares in a more unbalanced orientation to create some tension in the piece. But overall, great work.... keep playing!

A great piec with lots of texture and movement. I really don't mind the asymetrical design, but if it bothers you maybe you could add some small squares below it, either in fabric, paint, or thread.

This is a beautiful, elegant, simple piece. I don't mind the asymmetry either. It adds some tension to the overall view.

Love the texture from the cheesecloth. Your placement and colors are great. I also agree about the boarders

I love the interplay of colors here. I, too, had thought about this in my head but when I decided to use what I had in my stash it came out not nearly as lovely as yours. I do think the balance between top and bottom border is uneven. Since the 3 squares are all in a row I feel both the top and bottom black spaces should be the same.

I am always drawn to asymmetrical pieces so I love that the most about this piece. The contrast with your colors and the black background gives drama to the simple shapes. Did you try it without the piping? My thought would be to try it without that and in a fancy black carved frame for one more layer of contrast. All in all, it's a piece that I think really works well.

I love the texture of this piece. I usually gravitate to assymetrical design, and yours is no exception to that, however, It doesn't quite feel in balance to me. I like the idea of perhaps adding a smaller square in one of the lower corners or something. All in all, I like it a lot

Veronica,
I really feel a sense of calm when I look at your piece. The asymmetry feels right to me but if you are bothered by it I could see adding some dangling beaded threads below the squares.

The texture is fantastic and the colors are subtle , but a great effect. I like how you've added the black border wider at the bottom it just adds to the overall interest of the work. Great job.

Now I must paint cheese cloth. This is one I really must see in person. It feels heavy on the bottom and black. I can't tell from the picture if there is some details that I can't see. I really like the three squares and at first I didn't realized they were on a background.

Delicious drama! Love that it is on black and painted cheesecloth is one of my favorite fabrics. I am sure that it looks beautiful haanging on the wall.. with a light under it sending more play with shadows on it. Well done!
