Jonah's Mountain

I'm not a fan of pictoral quilts but had to make this for a dear friend's birthday gift (next week)... he took an amazing photo of the sunset over the Mohave Desert and posted it on Facebook. My comment? It's a quilt!

The rhythm of nature is often reflected in the rolling hills and layers of color that we see here in the mountains. Simply layered applique of my newest batch of hand dyes (actually done for this project), with machine quilting.

I love Andy Goldsworthy and have walked his Stone River on the Stanford University campus. His books adorn my bookshelf (eye candy!). But this photo spoke so deeply to me that I just had to follow it's lead.

Comments of course, are welcome!

Lovely, simple piece. I like the way you've used the hills for your rhythm and carried it into your stitching. Your friend is one lucky person.

A departure Wendy to be sure and it is beautiful. . your friend will love it... add to how special it is, you even hand dyed the fabric especially for it.. thank you for sharing this...I agree with your explanation of the rolling hills and natural layering of colors, particularly in the mountains.
Have your feet touched the ground yet? [smile]...

The simplicity of the piece draws me in, and then I get to enjoy the wonderful quilting which you have done. The fabric which you dyed for the sky just glows and perfectly compliments the purple of the mountains. This is very nice work and I am sure that your friend will treasure it!

Thanks, everyone! And yes, Carole, my feet have touched the ground and now I'm working on a pattern of a labyrinth for American Quilter! They want to publish St. Omer as a pattern in the winter, so I'm hard at work! Luckily I have computer buddies at work to help with the graphics and vector files! Stay tuned.
