Castle in the Mist

I worked from a piece I had trialled in an abstracting exercise. Although it looks a little bit like a castle, it was in fact some chemical crystals in a close-up photo. I fused the sheers with Misty Fuse - worked really well. Sometimes when I look at the darker squares near the bottom, I think they are distracting, but I really wasn't aiming for reality, just a suggestion. The quilting over that area in grey-lavender rayon has helped to unify the blocks.

When I saw the button challenge, I imagined I would do a funky piece. But obviously the funky gene is recessive!

This is a stunning and very appealing piece. The composition is good, the colors are very effective, and the quilting accentuates the design. It's very pleasant to look at - reminds me of a Paul Klee landscape ...subtle and calming.

This one has a terrific feeling of depth, largely because of the faded and blue tones of the background images contrasting with the warmer and darker tones in the foreground.. the quilting is effective too. It would be nice to know the size?

It's journal size, about 8 by 11 inches.

I really like the shapes and background shading. It gives a real sense of depth. I don't mind the dark block at the botton. It provides a visual base/weight for the composition. Good job!

I like the way you used the sheers for the misty mountains in the background. For some reason it makes me think of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books.

Love the misty mountains. This is a super creative piece that is simply elegant. I do however, think a facing would be more in keeping with this piece than the binding.

Thanks Sharon. Of course I live in MiddleEarth, so maybe that has something to do with it! Ann, it is such a small piece that I just did a double zigzag and couched a yarn on the edge. If I do this bigger one day, which I hope to, then I will think about facing.

You certainly used the sheers to good effect, it gives quite a feeling of depth, against the stronger colors, especially the red, of the closer towers.

I agree with the group on the depth created in this piece. It is soothing to look at.
