The Sentinels was inspired by the painting (above) by George Caitlin. Caitlin painted mostly scenes of Indian life as well as many Indian portraits. I first saw his work in the Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC where there is a large permanent installation of many of the portraits. I liked the lines and shapes in this particular painting; the embellishments are the decorative stitches around the spheres, in the striped fabric, and on both sides of the blue area. My quilt is approximately 24" x 18".

Nice abstraction of your chosen piece! Simply done but producing powerful lines. Your color choices really work well to abstract the artist's muted.colors. Good job!
Seeing these two pictures together, I finally "get it". You have the same basic shapes and angles. Now I understand how to abstract. Don't know why I couldn't see this before now.
Your abstraction is quite a jump from the original! The bold colors make quite a statement, and the quilting adds a nice texture when I look up close.
Your interpretation of the inspiration piece is very bold color-wise. I like the circles you've used to represent the shelters. The perspective, to me, is a bit off if you were working toward being true to the inspiration piece. But it isn't necessary in an abstraction.
