Just who am I ?

I've dreaded the idea of a self portrait; I'd rather remain invisible.
Here is my attempt at a self portrait...tongue in cheek; but not really.
I am such a novice at this; still have lots of techniques to try and master.
My favourite technique then is trying to make a quilt from my own hand-dyed fabrics..i can make the colors as wild as I like. Even though i wear black i love color.
Also incorporated Upside Down Applique which i am currently learning from Susan Brittingham.
Comments and critiques welcome.
Thanks,
Anna K.

  1. Anna. this is so 'great'... sounds like a 'cliche' but I don't mean it that way!!
I love this... those eyes are something else. I sympathize with your feeling as described in your write-up... the spot light can make one run for cover.I like your techniques, Susan would be pleased with your up-side down applique.
    Keep up the good work.

  2. Anna,
I like the way your quilt really represents your feelings and your fears. It is interesting to note you must feel more confident about your being a woman and a physician, as those two items have no question marks. I like you hand dyed fabric too - nice colors. Joni

  3. That is adorable. I love anything that makes me laugh.
I'm sure you can take the question marks off all those other qualities.

  4. I can totally relate! And I noticed the question marks too.... very interesting commentary on who you are and who you think you are...
I love the image of the full moon... usually symbolic of being visible and in your own fullness.. so I agree with the others, you don't need the other question marks....
    Great job!

  5. Hi Anna - You have done an outstanding job of picturing your doubts about yourself as well as making a statement about those areas where you feel solid. I like your comment "tongue-in-cheek but not really". I don't know about the other areas of your life where you have question marks but I think you can take the one off of artist. Anyone who can express so much with just a few words and shapes is an artist. So there....

Looking forward to seeing you come out from under cover.

  7. Hi Anna
I just love how you always manage to incorporate your signature "moon" in your pieces. What a wonderful color combination!
You need to drape that lovely purple around your shoulders and wear it proudly!

  8. Hi Anna,

I love this one, too. Sigh, there's a little Charlie Brown in all of us, isn't there? Her checkered skirt is adorable, and she even looks like her knees are shaking. This is a great take on the self-portrait, and you can definitely take the question mark off artist, anyway. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Hi Anna,

In looking at your piece, the orange of the sun(?) draws my immediate attention compared with all the other elements.

Secondly, I see the figure-in-hiding and then the words that encircle her. The look of the eyes doesn't give me the impression of fear as much as it seems like reservation (that she means to be known by only a few and only to whom she chooses). Funny, but the color of the caftan is so loud that it is hard for the figure to remain invisible.

The question marks and lack thereof in front of the words are an interesting element. Perhaps a revelation of sorts is on the horizon.
