Some say the world will end in fire,

"Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
to say that for destruction ice
Is also great
and would suffice" -- Robert Frost

I wanted to do a combo piece but also wanted to follow the rules. I think a companion piece would be similar - perhaps more prismatic than flowing.

Randomly pieced blocks, fused with free form cut shapes. I tried bonding powder to no avail, so I covered the whole thing with red tulle and quilted with gold thread.

The part I liked the best was that I used no templates. I formulated the idea in my head and ran with it. I am loosening up a lot.

  1. I wondered if anyone else had thought of this poem. It is the first thing that popped in my head when I read the theme for this month.

Isn't not using templates fun? I have found it very freeing to work this way. It allows for more spontanaity and more natural looking shapes.

A very hot looking piece. What if you had made the background darker to contrast with the bright colored flames.

  2. I think the silver flames look like ice, and the idea of icy fire intrigues me. It's a paradox. I'm thinking of hot hot flames with an occasional cold cold shiver.

And I did think of the Robert Frost poem, too, but didn't "go" with it.

Yours is a very nice quilt!

  3. Karen,
Your quilt is very fiery! It certainly has alot of visual impact, and I like the way the quilting adds even more fire to the quilt. One does wonder if our world will end this way. (hope not)

  4. Hi Karen,
I think this is a great piece; love the background and the fiery flames. I really like the contrast of the icy flames as well as the green in the sun. Great job.

  5. Being a 'traditional' quilter first, I quickly spoted your background and so true..... no templates.. Hurrah! for freedom.
The piece is exciting, in and of itself. The green surprises me, not sure why, maybe used to and expecting more depth with fire and its hot, charry base. I love the flames... like tongues and the licking your quilting does. Good job!!

  6. I really like your flames - both the red and the icy ones. The bit of green adds a nice complementary contrast to all the red and orange.

  7. I liked the fact that you used green, as it helps the veiwer to realise it is the world burning up, rather than a fiery sun or star. It some how gives a bit of hope, too...like perhaps it won't totally burn up? I think black would have been too dispairing.

I hadn't heard the Robert Frost poem, but I think if you did a companion piece to this one, it would really make a fantastic set. well done!

  8. I love the spot of green - it works really well since it is the opposite of red. Great movement as well.

  9. Hi Karen - I really like this piece. It fits so well with the poem. I too like the bit of green still bravely holding on. It does add an element of hope. The silvery flames look like they are super hot to me - an added emphasis to the fire. I also think the background adds a lot to the work. Super.

  10. You often see green at the base of a very hot fire. I love everything about this quilt! If it were mine, I would frame it along with the poem!
