The Window of My Heart

This is the first piece I have done since before my husband passed away last summer.

My late husband and son are in the window.  I used a window with shutters because I no longer can see them in this world but they are very much a part of my heart. I have a series of window and door pictures from New Orleans.  Many of them are shuttered closed.  I picked this one because although it is shuttered, the shutters are open to see inside.  I used photoshop PS5 to merge the faces into the window.  I printed out the picture on cotton and cut it out.  The background is some fabric I painted last year and it seemed like a good background for a window.  I have quilted the piece but have not bound it because I plan to matt and frame it.

  1. Allow me to first extend my condolences to you in the loss you've had, and then to congratulate you in finishing this piece.

I love the painted background...that has a suggestion of 'blockness' without overpowering the window or the images behind it.

The piece is definitely a successful response to the challenge (including the contrast element). But it is so much more...a piece that gives voice to your enduring love of two special people in your life.

  4. You have met the challenge in such a personal way. I am very sorry for the loss which you have experienced. It is a beautiful piece with a depth of feeling attached to it. The painted background fabric is wonderful and the perfect compliment for the black and white window. This will be a piece which you will treasure forever!

  5. BEAUTIFUL!

What a meaningful and gorgeous response. I have been framing my small pieces lately. They really stand out as a piece of art.

I am very interested in how you merged the photo. I have elements which came with my scanner. However, I still have not taken the time to figure it out. I get so frustrated, that I just quit. I am impressed with your success.

  6. Ann, I have been working with photoshop for many years (I am on my third version of the program). Photography is another one of my hobbies. I merged the photos using layers and one of the filters to get the faces to blend in the background. Pick up a photoshop book on making photo collages. Most of my pieces invlove altered photos. It combines my love of photography with quilting.

  7. What a warm tribute to your husband and son, with their faces peering ghost-like through the shutters! I love the detail of the window, particularly the bit of gingerbread on top, and the painted fabric as a wall is perfect. I hope you stay simple with the mat and frame.
