Justa Cuppa
The shading and color shifts of the coffee cup were done by fussy cutting a single piece of commercial hand-dyed/tie-dyed looking stuff. The background is a second piece of fabric. I used a fabric collage technique with a layer of purple tulle over it. There are approximately 25+ individual pieces of fabric for the collage and it is quilted along the lines of the cup and saucer. The quilt itself is 5.5x8 and the green backing (not a part of the quilt) and frame are 8.5x11.
This is really neat.

I think this is outstanding. It has form and depth, light and shadow. The fabric choices and placement are just too good. The only part I think might be improved upon is the green "mat". It may just be the photography but it seems a bit bright in comparison with the muted colors you have used in the body of the quilt.

I love your use of the hand dyed fabric. You have used unexpected colors very successfully.
ReplyDeleteThere is a bit of ambiguity in the background. I am looking down at the cup, so I would expect to see a table underneath it. But the background fabric seems to be vertical, making the cup and even its shadow seem to float. Not neccessarily a bad thing; it makes it seem more abstract. Not sure how you would fix that if you wanted to set it on something more solid.
I like the frame and green background. They bring out the bit of yellow and green in your cup.
The fabric choice is stunning and you have such dimension.
ReplyDeleteYou have certainly met and exceded this challenge's guidelines.
Hi Rhonda, This is a wonderful little piece with great color and effective use of cropping. I love the turquoise and purple together with the soft looking background...sort of ethereal. It was very daring to combine the green mat and yellow green frame...did you audition other colors too?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a fine piece!

How fun that you used one piece of fabric for the cup. Great color and value choices. I like that it appears to float above the background. It's quite intriguing that way. Nice quilting too!
