ICE
didn't photograph well. I painted misty fuse with PearlEx paints, added some ultrafine glitter and fused it to a batik. Then I quilted with a metallic thread, and added a border of "cracked ice", which really is not green/gold, but holographic.
FIRE
was a block waiting to be quilted. I left the edges unfinsihed, and let the battening stick out to symblize the ashes of the fallen trees.
Both blocks are 12.5 inches square.

I really like this abstract depiction of fire. It looks very very hot to me, and the trees are in the process of falling in the flames. Very nice piece!
ReplyDeleteI think the ice quilt is done well. Isn't it frustrating when the photos can't do justice to effects like you tried to use. I would love to see this in the flesh, as your technique description sounds like it was very effective.
ReplyDeletethe fire quilt is a very wonderful abstract. yet, you can see the fire taking hold, and more and more trees being destroyed. the more you look at it, the more you begin to think about the ravages of the fire on the forest and its inhabitants.
well done.

Hi Katherine - I can't really see the complexity of the Ice quilt - sometimes pictures don't tell the story - wish I could see the glitter and gleam. But I can definitely see the fire quilt. It is a great depiction of fire in the forest. I think this work is very beautiful.

The quilting lines in the ice piece seem to depict the coldness of the north, the winds blowing across the snow.
ReplyDeleteThe fire piece is wonderful, the fabric choice is wonderful as each piece looks like a different intensness of the 'fire'.
Hi Katherine, wow...2 pieces...good job on both, too.
ReplyDeleteThe ice quilt does look "icy" and I'm sure it looks great in person. I've found that wholecloth art quilts are difficult because of a lack of focal point/contrast to make it interesting from afar. A couple ideas - darker and/or subtle colored thread for some of the quilting - follow some of the lines in the hand dyed/mottled fabric.
The fire quilt is wonderful...so Southwestern and so you!
Looking forward to seeing more of your work in upcoming challenges.

Hi Katherine..... Wow.. on two pieces.
ReplyDeleteI like both pieces, obviously the fire piece 'reads' better, but I like the ice because I have worked with the same materials you have used. I KNOW that in person, the ICE piece is cold and frosty, isn't it?
I would love to see a better picture, somehow, because I know it it is under-preseneted.
Good work.

Hi Katherine,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on both of these. I think your quilting on the ice piece really makes it look like a frozen pond. The fire piece is great, and reads to me like a much larger piece. Really nice.
