Sunset

I'm not sure that this meets the challenge. I know there are saturated colors and tones, but I don't quite understand the "planes" part of the challenge. I tried to get the feeling of a photograph that I took, and added Inuksuk to continue the series. I think he's waving at the geese...or maybe the sandhill cranes returning to the Platte River at sunset as they fatten up on corn for their long trip north. The size of the piece is 10" x 8".

  1. I love your sunset colors and the contrast with the dark sky. What would happen if you added some planes of darker grasses? Would that give more depth? Great job!

  2. Lovely use of color. The sunset is beautiful. My interpretation of the "Planes and masses" portion of this challenge is to use light and shadow to establish some sense of volume, space or depth. To me, your piece from challenge 13 is a good example of this. I find myself wondering if either the tree or Inuksuk had a shadow might it provide more depth?

  3. I agree with the shadows and darker grass towards the front. Also, would fine lines of white in the dark sky at a bit of brightness?
I do really like the sunset and agree that he's probably waving good-bye to all the departing Sandhills here in Nebraska right now.

  4. I like the Sandhills flying overhead. I think it helped to draw you back farther into the piece rather than stop at the little character.

  5. Your 'Inuksuk' series is such fun! I can't wait each month to see "where in the world is Inuksuk today?" Beautiful sunset...

  6. Katie, you continue to surprise me with where that Inukshuk might show up :)
I agree that some shadows on the inukshuk and the trees might add more depth to it.
The sunset is very vivid and beautiful, just like we see up here often.
