Goldsworthy I

Thanks for a fantastic challenge. When I first began to read the challenge I went right to the Andrew Goldsworthy site and was blown away by the images. I love his use of negative space. I quickly jumped into my piece. A while ago I had seen a segment on QA TV about using a quilt-on-top-of-a-quilt and I decided to explore that technique in this challenge. I tried to make the background flow through both quilts, reversing it in the top quilt to play up the positive/negative space. Once the quilt was done I actually went back and read the specifics of the challenge and realized I needed a natural element. As an afterthought I added the four small shells in the corners of the smaller quilt which makes it appear to be riveted to the larger quilt. For the most part, I'm happy with the results, but I can see myself further exploring both the concepts of Goldsworthy and the technique of two quilts combined in one piece.

Measurements are 15" x 25". Comments would be appreciated.

  1. Veronica... love this piece. Great color and texture/color choices! The movement is lovely and calm, and the graphic quality reminds me of microscopy images. I would so love to see a series! Well done!

  2. This is a fascinating piece. That green is an excellent choice and makes a very strong focus with the rust and what looks like black on my monitor. I also liked your positioning of the top quilt to the left rather than centering it. Love the quilting.

  3. Actually Veronica, when I first viewed this piece it reminded me of rocks in a riverbed. I really like the concept of layering a quilt on top of another quilt and the feel which you created is very smooth and flowing. Your color choices on the top quilt draw the eye in and then the fabric shapes and quilting take me through the quilt. You did a very nice job with this challenge.

  4. A series would be great following on this first piece. I can see one in indigos and watery blues. It definitely flows and I love that you followed directions and came up with the perfect final touch. :o) I had so many ideas, I jumped in without internalizing all the specifics...

  5. I really like this one Veronica. The layering effect is very striking. It makes me think of the way a drawing or illustration will isolate one area for more detailed description. almost as if it's magnifying one small area for special attention. You achieved a wonderful flowing feeling.
