Lady Arbor
I have been fascinated with the principles of Gestalt, and in this piece tried to use as many as I could. The sky is woven using many different fabrics for texture and contrast, the repeating shapes represent Proximity. The birds swooping from top, across the quilt and out the side show Continuation. The repeating shapes of the birds- Similarity; the bird flying in the opposite direction-Anomaly; The tree/lady- Closure.
The tree is appliqué cut in one piece using a suede cloth, and the leaves are 'beaded’ netting. The birds are appliqués made from a copper tissue lame fused to a copper suede cloth.

Cherie, this is amazing.... lyrical and charming and mystical all at once! (You had a head start and I'm so glad you did!)....
ReplyDeleteThanks Wendy. Actually, I didn't start early. I had a rough sketch of
ReplyDeletejust the tree that I did while researching, but I didn't begin work on it until last Thursday. It sort of grew together on its own. I just pulled out a pile of fabrics and let them speak to me...such fun!

You have put a lot of thought into your piece and it shows! Of course, the tree is the focal point, but that background is the real eye catcher. Love how it seems to be floating and flowing out of the quilt. Just a suggestion, but perhaps you could have created more interest by moving the tree a little more one way or the other. To my eye it appears very centered. Love the birds in flight and the curves that are so pleasing to look at. Done very well indeed!
ReplyDeleteI love that tree shape, and I agree with Louise that the sky is magical--it almost seems to move, although the shape of the tree and the moving birds help. The whole is greater than the parts!
ReplyDeleteThis is mystical- the weeping tree seems to talk with its movement, The birds add the color as they venture on their journey. Copper tissue - awesome.
