I was interested in pursuing the idea of rudimentary shapes suggesting a whole. I did it in reverse, Starting with a high contrast photo of my cat and eliminating shading, and texture. I don't have time to translate this into cloth right now, but I have done several croppings to try to get the least amount of information which will still convey the personality. For example, if I cut to just an eye, two eyes, and /or nose, it could read as several different animals. Very stimulating to think of all the elements that are essential and the others that aren't.

What a terrific study Julia! It's absolutely mesmerizing. I would love to see the other 'cropping s' you speak of if you have time to post and share. It is so amazing how our brain can fill in the missing pieces and make this a very viable picture of a cat.
ReplyDeleteHope you find the time to translate into fabric...I love it

Very impressive Julie. Who would have 'thunk' you could create this type of image on the computer. What photo editing program did you use and how exactly did you do it? I also am hoping that you will take the time to interpret this into a fiber piece. Job well done!

Thanks Cherie and Louise. You can get a good idea of what else you could eliminate by putting a sheet of paper over the image. I used PSE 7, changed to b & w, posterized to 3 levels, then changed the grey to black. Then used the eraser to 'rub' out the stripes, and the background. Then cropped some more...
ReplyDeleteI love it Great technique.
