Genesis 1:16

18" by 8"
Painted cotton with Tempera Paint, sea salt
Commercial Fabric
Metallic, Rayon thread
Fusible gems

I originally created a background with Dyn-na-flow paints, but found it boring and too light for my needs. My 12 year old daughter, Tessa made this background at the same time using her washable tempera paints and sea salt. When I saw how great it was, I asked if I could use it for the challenge. She agreed as long as I gave her credit (grin). After heat setting and cutting up the background, I added a commercial print from Paula Nadlestern's collection and embellished with Glitter thread. Because I truly believe that less is more when it comes to embellishing, I just added a few fusible gems at the end to give it a little twinkle-twinkle. I finished the edges just with a free motion scribble of green and orange thread.

  1. I love the sheer inventiveness of this piece. The shape, the use of threads for bindings, and the excellent use of complementary colors.

  3. Hi Nina-Marie - I looked up your biblical reference and I think you did a great job picturing the "two great lights". I didn't quite get it at first glance but now see the light of day and the light of night. Good interpretation.

  7. Very nice. I like the curved panel shape and the colors, not to mention the flower explosion shapes that made me want a second close up look.
Fusible gems? Perfect touch I think.

  9. I want to thank everyone for their kind words. Your encouragement will help in the next challenge - I was really nervous on this one!

I thought I would give my critique as if it wasn't my own piece. I love the background fabric too, with its palette of complementary colors. I like the balance and the symmetry of the piece. I think it would be stronger with a clear focal point and maybe if some neutral color was added to the palette. The edges and shape though add some interest.

Oh - and in answer about the the tempera paint and setting - I used an iron to heat set it but I wouldn't trust it in the washer.

  10. Nice fabric that your daughter did and what a treat for her to see it in this finished piece. I like the shape and the good integration of complementary colors.

  11. Very nice piece. I love the strong colors and the unexpected effects from the salt. I don't think even heat setting will make the tempera washable. If it won't spoil the hand, you might try a light spray of textile medium over the whole piece. I wouldn't brush it on as that might run. I have sprayed this on pieces before with success.

  12. Beautiful and unusual piece. The shape and the edges and the panels. Did you create the piece first and then cut it into panels? The fabric is beautiful and your embellishments add interest and draw the viewer in.
