I put this together tonight.  It is made of a variety of materials in circular and oblong shapes.  Comments welcome!

Indian Maiden

It has been some time since I did a fabric piece.  But I still remember how...must be like riding a bicycle.  Anyway, my inspiration for this challenge was 'Indian Maiden at Stockade' by Charles Marion Russell painted in 1892 (first image image).

I've used more of a simplistic cubist method of abstraction of the figure.  The background...is different altogether in that I liked the look of the block figure against this pattern.  In addition, I've tried to give it some foreground/ground using organzas at the bottom.

All comments welcome!

My Eyes

My eyes are from a Photoshop drawing that I finished over the weekend.  Much of the work I've been doing lately are combinations of freehand line drawings and my altered photographs layered in Photoshop.  One day, maybe some of them will find their way into art quilts.

Snail Flower

This was a quick piece...started and completed it tonight!

A few years ago, I created a quilt block design based on a pair of snails.  Tonight, I worked with that block in Photoshop flipping it vertically and horizontally a few times, and then printed the image on a cotton fabric sheet.  The snail part of the printed image was enhanced with free-motion thread work.

How does this relate to infinity?  It relates because the design could be continued to infinity and already travels beyond its border.

By the way, the top part of the finished piece reminds me of a flower which is how the piece got its name.

Whoohoo...response to Challenge #78 completed!

Portal of the Nobles
(Inspiration Photo)

Thank you for this most enjoyable challenge, Susan!

My first step was to go through oodles of travel photos to find doors and doorways until I found this inspiration photo (a door in Scotland).  Then I made templates for certain elements and auditioned lots of fabrics (especially background fabrics) to see how contrast could be achieved in the piece.

The background I chose is a lovely sheet of fiber paper (overlaid on a piece of white cotton fabric) that I found at a local art store recently.  It sewed through beautifully!

As always, comments welcome!

Mixed Media Response

This piece took on a Valentine's theme and is a mixed media challenge response on stretched canvas.  Elements include beading, leather, embossed metallic tape, ribbon, paint, alcohol inks, stamping, glitter and a variety of pen work.  I had planned to do some machine sewing (couching) but ended up not being able to fit the canvas under the needle/presser foot to do so.  So, the piece took off in a very different direction than originally envisioned.  The beading design is based on an altered photo of a tree trunk.  The writing is 'life with magic' (repeated).

"Zero My!"

None of the numerology numbers that came up for me...'felt' right.  So, I got to thinking about how I like circles (with beginnings and endings that are seamless) and that you can easily cut out the center of a circle to get the number zero.  That is what this piece is about.  It is definitely out-of-the-box for me....not square, even, or finished with a binding, and not the normal batting and backing material (even though there is a sandwich).  Note the title too:  Zero My! (instead of Oh My!).  For as strange as this is, I like it.

Challenge #74 Done!

"On the Hunt"
Finished this piece 12/27/12, but am posting based on an earlier date that will fall under Challenge 74 works.

This piece started as a UFO (the background part - that was created from a Japanese block pattern).  I had fun in creating the 'hunter' faces ~~ that are based on mask patterns from one of the fabrics.  This 'take' on the Mission Possible challenge theme is that these hunters are hunting some of the buttons that have decided to go into hiding (and are visibly invisible).

The Day and Night Flip!

Originally, I posted the bottom panel as a standalone image, since I wasn't going to have time to do any creative work this past week due to work-related conferences.  After my return Friday, I completed  two additional panels that I consider valances.  One is for day and the other for night...on Planet Loopiland.  You can flip the panels easily to change one 'time of day' to the other.

My loop element is the hanging system for the panels.  The loops are intertwined.  There are 3 green loops for the day panel; 4 blue/purple loops for the night panel; and 2 larger blue/purple loops for the bottom panel.

I took photos of this piece last night using a green fabric tube to cover the rod used.  But I think I may remove that fabric tube, because it seems to hold the eye from moving around the entire piece.

All comments welcome!

A Quiver of Cobras

This is my August challenge piece...A Quiver of Cobras.  I was so surprised to learn that a group of cobras was called a quiver...and voila (with a little help from internet imagery)!

I'll be hosting the September challenge -- coming up in days, and I hope you have fun with it!

Challenge 71

Ranuncula Patch in Hundertwasser's Garden

Flaxen Fete
The first piece was finished before Challenge #71 but seemed so apropos to the theme.  So, I did another one that was similar in style, but completely different in background and quilting.
