Words

I make a lot of quilts using words, but for meaning more than as artistic elements. This quilt is the opposite. There is no meaning, but I had fun with the letters. Several background fabrics that have words printed on them demanded to be in the quilt.

Blue Initials

This little quilt was from a guild challenge to use

our initials. I like blue. It's nice to make a quilt just for fun.

Six Sonner Suns

I have (finally) finished my circle-themed quilt. Six Sonner Suns is about our recent trip to Germany to visit my husband's aunt and uncle. We are all Sonners (4 by birth, 2 by marriage). We traveled around the green countryside and enjoyed lots of sunshine with blue skies and some clouds. We even found a strawberry farm run by Sonners. It was fun recreating the colors of the trip and adding happy family photos. This quilt is part of my family history series, which is evolving into family travel.

Temperance

This quilt is about "Temperance" and is the newest in my series of family history quilts. The photo in the center is of my great-grandmother, Laura Kincaid Seaman Meade. To the left is her father, the "father of Sumner [WA]," who was very pro-temperance. To the right is Laura's second husband - a "hops king" until aphids destroyed that industry. The photo in the top row is of a hops kiln and workers in Sumner. Sumner was a "dry" town, but many residents became rich from hops, from which beer is made. I have no idea how Laura handled this situation.
I have not quilted this top yet. I enjoyed finding lots of antique-ish red prints. I will probably add more quotes. There are also quotes and images about temperance and the hops industry on the back.

Joy, Peace

These two quilts, "Joy" and "Peace", are in remembrance of my sister, Joy, who died May 3, 2013. I wrote a lot of memories and thoughts on them, both fronts and backs.

Infinity Spiral

This 7" quilt was supposed to show a dark square spiraling infinitely into a light center. There are actually 5 different yellow fabrics in the center, but they are almost too small to see. It didn't come out as envisioned, but it was fun to make and a surprise to see how it turned out.

Windy Windows

This quick quilt shows windows - looking in and looking out. The wavy quilting reminded me of wind. This "freeform" technique was inspired by Rayna Gillman's book.

Landscape

I got the idea for this quilt when I saw a sliver of light between vertical blinds shine on a run on the floor. While this is not my favorite quilt, I learned that I use mostly medium values (I'm enticed by the colors and don't pay as much attention to value) and that high contrast between light and dark is powerful!

Raven Quilt

This is my quilt for the #48 challenge using metal.

My family likes ravens and their antics. I imagined a raven collecting shiny metal things to decorate its nest (made of fabric "sticks"). I added a yellow water bottle because many years ago a raven stole my son's water bottle at a picnic area.
