Also finished something for the Under the Sea Challenge 43. I've been taking a painting on fabric class at Quilt University which has been really fun. I painted some fish which came out really nice - a trout and a salmon. Then I stitched them to add dimension. Shown is the salmon and the trout.

Just finished Challenge 42 - I'm just a bit behind! I was also doing this for a challenge in an art group I'm in here in Maine. We had to use something from the hardware store.

The manipulated part is in the landscape. I pleated the fields - they're hard to see in the photo because my hardware item is screening. My intent was looking through the keyhole/screen door. A friend has some old keys so I will also be sewing on some of those as embellishments.

Challenge 41 - Angel Banner

I needed a new sign for my booth for the art shows, so for this challenge I decided to fractured a label that I often use on my quilts. My colors were blue, purple and yellow. The banner is actually a crazy pieced fabric using whites/off-whites --- I needed some lighter area where my name will go. The whole thing is stitched to Timtex and it will be hung in my booth. It's approximately 8"x18". Looking at the picture on the screen, I realized the deep yellow piece in the lower right hand corner reads orange, not yellow. I may stitch something over that as it really sticks out. Thanks for your comments.

Challenge 40

I actually finally finished a challenge - late, but done. I liked the raisin bag - it was colorful and then when I walked into my studio, I spotted the watercolor (picture on the right) I'd done of the caladiums - many of the same colors - so there was my still life. Finished piece is much darker than the package and the watercolor. I'm going to do this piece again with a different background and another hand-dyed fabric for the caladiums to see if I can lighten it up a bit.

Challenge 26

Better late than never. I finally completed challenge 26. Continuing with my series of working from my watercolor paintings, I selected a bean pot/onion/spoon composition. I've posted both the watercolor and the fabric piece. Doing this in a monochromatic color scheme was a challenge because in the watercolor I can purples and blues to get the contrast.

I actually completed several recycled collages this last week for Fiber Art for a Cause and I think they meet the criteria for this challenge.

The one posted is What Flower Is This - it started with a scrap of fabric as the background and I frayed the edges. Then I added satin, torn paper pieces, netting, plastic curtain rounds, and embroidery thread --- all stuff I had laying around. Lately I've enjoyed incorporating paper into my quilts - there's such a great selection of papers that the scrapbookers use.

It's 7x9 mounted on an 8x10 mat.

Cake Poker

I knew the minute I saw "cake poker" that this was the one I would use. The image of a Royal Flush sitting on a cake immediately came to mind. With the funky background, I decided to glitz it up a bit by bobbin drawing heavy gold braid around the top/sides.....almost like a neon sign would beckon you in to play a game. I fused the real cards to the fabric and quilted the background using the triangles as a guide.

I limited myself to work on this for 2 hours between other projects. It all went together very quickly. This was fun and I chuckle every time I look at it.

Just posted my attempt at scale/proportion. In my estimation, it's not
very successful. I decided to work in black/gray/white. I sketched out
the building and tried to eliminate a lot of the detail and stick to
just the shapes. Using a photocopy of the picture, I looked at the
grayscale and cut shapes without using any patterns. The best part is
the lower left corner where you can see some distance through the
curved openings. The rest leaves a lot to be desired.
I learned:
- abstracting from a photo is difficult - I tend to want to put in
more detail
- although I had an idea of what I wanted to do and had thought about
it during the week, I really didn't have enough time to execute it.
But then I'm not sure if I'd had more time, it would have looked any
better.
- this exercise was probably not the best one to do in a monochromatic
color scheme.
- don't attempt this when you're tired!

Mill2

I started with Mill1 - had it on the design wall for a bit and realized that the buildings were really too small. Revised, cut down the sidewalk/road and made the buildings bigger, which then became Mill2. This one seems better proportioned. I was aiming for simplicity and starkness.
thanks for any comments.
