"Got You" and "Vitamin C"

The left quilt was not chosen for this year's pet challenge but seemed to fit the current challenge. A close up photo of my cat was printed onto freezer-paper-backed-cotton that had been prepared with two layers of Golden’s “Digital Grounds”. The cat’s head, front leg and the brightest areas of her fur were then heavily thread-painted. To increase the shadows surrounding the cat, the mini floral background quilt was constructed separately using fusible appliqué. The mini quilt was folded before attaching it and the thread-painted cat to a base layer of muslin. Finally, the entire piece was heavily quilted. The selective thread painting, dimensional folding and background quilting were combined to move the cat visually and dimensionally further into the foreground
For this week's challenge, the right quilt, I used fused commercial and hand dyed fabric pieces to make the orange, blueberries and beet tops and added thread painting and minimal quilting to add dimension.
Thank you again for another great challenge.
Comments appreciated Both pieces are 12" X 12"

Challenge 51: "In and Out" by Sue from NC

Using a square as my shape, I wanted to explore color perception for this challenge.

I used an acrylic painting by Frank Stella "Double Scramble: Value Scales, Yellow & Spectrum" reproduced and discussed in the book "Color in Contemporary Painting" by Charles Le Clair as my starting point.

My original design using mid to dark value purple squares to complete the larger square seemed to diminish the optical illusion of spatial depth. (see photo below).

My revised design (top) uses implied squares to maximize the color effect. There are no quilting lines through any of the blocks. The apparent "lines" are optical illusions.

Great challenge.

Comments welcome.

Drunken Bee

My Haiku is from "The Essential Haiku Versions of Basho, Suson and Issa".

a bee
staggers out
of the peony
by Basho

This quilt measures 8 1/4" X 12".
The peony is hand painted using Seta colors on a silk/cotton fabric to give the peony "shine". My stitch element is the peony center thread painting. I attempted a personal challenge of creating a three-dimensional bee. It is less effective than I wanted in this piece.
Comments welcome.

Thank you for a truly inspirational challenge, Kathy. I think that already each of the resulting quilts has been successful in artistically creating an emotion or mood. Every one of them is beautiful.

Challenge 49: Night Stalker Modified

"Night Stalker" is a fused applique piece using mostly batiks that was threadpainted minimally.
It is approximately 12" X 13".
The quilting is a repeated moth pattern, black on black.
The light source was a flashlight.
The modified version has added darks to the cat's back.
Thank you for this interesting first challenge.
