Africa Inspirations

This is my quilt for Challenge #10. About a year ago, I made a little quilt using some shark's teeth from an old necklace that I'd had for years. I loved the way that the quilt turned out, but had no more shark's teeth, so then I went on a mission buying shark teeth on e-bay! Who knew they came in such varieties? These are a long, ivory variety--don't ask me what kind of shark they are from! I also have some little shiny black ones that I intend to use someday.

This is my entry for this month's challenge. I began with a variety of different fabrics from sheers to faux suade, drapery material to shimmery copper I don't know what it even is! I fused a lightweight interfacing to most of them, and then was able to treat them like regular fabrics.


The quilt is fairly large: 34 x 34 inches. I quilted it with a lot of different designs, as shown in the close up. You can see a picture of my original palate of fabrics and the blocks in progress on my blog if you are interested: www.enchanted-art.blogspot.com. This was so much fun. Recently I have discovered that I can use non-traditional fabrics and the quilt police won't come get me!

Its Not Easy Being Green

This is my entry for Challenge #6. It is quilt #2 in a series of leaf quilts. It measures 12 x 9 inches. The first one that I made was all in shades of blues and greens, and I wondered what it would look like with a pop of red. So this challenge was the perfect excuse to try. I am going to play around with this idea a little more in some series quilts.

Jaws and Claws

This is my challenge 2 piece "Jaws and Claws" inspired by the lines in the Jabberwocky poem. It measures 15 x 12.5 inches. Techniques used were foundation paper piecing, bobbin work with Razzle Dazzle, sheer fabric overlay, heavy quilting to define certain areas, and couching yarn. The "binding" is also couched yarn. This was a stretch for me, interpreting a poem into abstract, but a good learning lesson. I made several other sketches that I might develop in the future. Feedback is welcome!

Autumn in Albuquerque

This is my challenge piece, "Autumn in Albuquerque".

The idea behind it was--Autumn here in the Southwest is usually a little later than in other parts of the country. When I looked around, I saw a lot of green still, and what I really noticed was an abundance of yellow and purple flowers. So I knew that I would use the new yellow/purple fabric that I handdyed a couple weeks ago. As for the 3-D element, I have been wanting to do a quilt with the pleats that are a different color on each side, and this was the perfect opportunity. I used green on one side, and the yellow/purple on the other side to symbolize the change of the seasons from Spring and Summer greens to Fall. The background is black with irregular dots of yellow, tan, greens and turquoise-- colors of the SW.
