Rhoda...challenge 1
Here is my attempt at the first challenge, and my first challenge.
The house is one similiar to what my husband was raised in.
The house is done on muslin, lot's of stitching and Shiva Oil Sticks.
This was fun.

Hi Rhoda - Your quilt has a lot going for it - good use of commercial fabrics, nice thread-painting as well as the use of the Painstiks. My favorite part is the little fence you created. You've succeeded in creating depth - which isn't the easiest thing to do.
The only thing you might consider changing if you do a similar quilt is the way the house is sitting. I first saw your close-up picture and thought the house was getting ready to fall over a cliff. When I saw the whole piece I could see how you extended the house a bit into the border but it still has a rather unsteady feeling.
Thanks for sharing this interesting work.
Roberta
Rhoda, i do like all the threadwork on this quilt. I also felt as if the house was about to tip off a cliff, it wasn't until the larger view that i realised that the house extended into the border.
Constructive criticism is most welcomed.
I've been looking at it and had the same feeling...I also think the road should have led to the house, not behind it?
Hi Rhoda...I've been trying to leave comments for 3 days and have been locked out for some reason?
Now finally!...I really love your house! It has such a warm lived in feel to it. I think the road is fine going behind the house, however, what if it were wider at that point, continuing at a less sharp angle? I love the house extending into the frame, but what if you also extend the cliff into the frame as well, and perhaps a little beyond the bottom of the house? I feel like that would sort of "stabilize" the house and really pop it into the foreground.
All in all, I love this piece...

Rhoda, I really like the mood you created with your colour choices. It feels like a late November day just before the first snow fall. It reminds me of those wonderful Andrew Wyeth paintings of the landscape around his Chadds Ford, PA home.
Hi Rhoda,
My first thought seeing this was the Wizard of Oz. It looks like the storm is coming and the house is about to be swept up! I like how the fabrics in the foreground really have the feel of an old farm out in the country. I really love this piece. It has a lot of character.

Hi Rhonda, I actually like the unstable feeling of the house...it looks like a tornado is brewing and the house is going to fly off (like the Wizard of Oz...Brenda and I think alike!)
It's great...I wouldn't change a thing except it's home address (send it to Boulder, Colorado please).
Glad you're here.
Cynthia
I love the Burnt wood effect on the house. Well, that's what I thought of when I saw it! how did you do that?
I was going to say that I quite like the detail version of the house. it shows up the character so well. Although I like the "tornado coming" aspect of the main photo, that others mentioned, I think the house is really special and would love to go discover it! It seems like there are lots of stories to be told about it. that is what I feel in the cropped photo.
Sandy
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
I did the siding on the house with thread and then used the Shiva Paint sticks to add shadows.
