Max Patch

Here is a little 9 x 12 silk quilt that I finished just before this challenge was issued.

(I have also added the altered photo of the actual spot in the mountains)

It is based on an altered photo of "Max Patch", a beautiful spot on the Appalachian Trail where you have a 360-degree view of all the splendor around.
It is all Dupioni silk, with lots of thread painting, and of course,
a few beads...

Fabulous colors Marilyn. I have never worked with silk, this looks so rich.
Are all the little trees thread painted.
This fits right in with the challenge.

I like the depth in the piece and shadowing, as well as what I think may be decorative stitches. I think it is a peaceful scene, love the mountains in the background.

There is nothing at all like dupioni silk to work with... the way it scrunches and adds so much texture. Love those colors... I can almost feel the summer breeze on my face. The strata rock is visible in the distance...
did you use the Embellisher by any chance?
Great job!

Thanks for the comments! This was really fun to do.

Yes the little trees are just made with my basic zig-zag stitches. I don't paint at all, only with thread. I made another little postcard sized piece, and I like its composition even better. Silk is a joy to work with.

I really love the effect of the zigzag forest stitching! I will certainly try that sometime. Are all the color nuances in the sky thread painting? So realistic! I love the silk too.

All the clouds are free motion quilted with different subtle shade of grays and light blues.

What a good excuse to buy lots of thread! Many shades of blue and green, gold and gray.

Beautiful colors, but then silk does take dye so beautifully, I really like the zig zag trees and other textures you have added with your thread. I think I would have liked the gray clouds to be slightly lighter in color, but that is me being picky, I know how hard it can be to get just the fabric color you want. And the thread work does a lot to lighten them up. Congratulations on a very successful piece.

Lovely work, you must have spent a great deal of time thread painting! You achieved a very gentle feel to this piece, with the soft rolling hills.
