I think this fits the challenge very well. I like your soft colors surrounded by the black and white. Nice job!
This reminds me of alot of the art deco vases and other stand around decorations of the period. Fun colors!

This really evokes the art deco style to me. It does look like the front of a theater and your hubby was spot on suggesting the border treatment.
