Setacolor was used to sunprint the fabric that the 3" squares were cut from. I used a variety of plants, wooden hoops, washers, needlepoint canvas, and plastic doilies. I tried many background colors, but when I auditioned this piece of orange, it began to sing. 
I used Setacolor with a little pearlescent paint added on this gorgeous Haroati Silk. I love it the way it is and will probably keep it whole.
Both pieces are approximately 18" x 24" and neither have been quilted yet. Although one has very hard, straight edges and the other is soft and flowing, both are all about the interaction of color.
Fun challenge.

Oooh, I love this piece... in fact it gives me some ideas of what to do with some of the snow dyes I did this week.... The negative space in the center brings the orange forward and a perfect compliment to the painted pieces... way to go!

I looked at the first piece and I liked it. The orange and blue really vibrate. One of my color field attempts used orange and blue, but mine was awful. THEN I got to the second peice and was blown away. I could care less if it is a color field or not. It is simply wonderful. I hope you quilt it and post the results. Veronica
These are both gorgeous pieces! The use of the complementary colors works well and to me helps to provide some tension. The way in which you placed the pieces is very pleasing to the eye. Leaving the large open space in the middle reminds me of one of those eye tricks in which you stare at the object for a long time, close your eyes, look again, and see the objects now in the center. A very nice piece.
I agree with the other comments. These are both beautiful pieces. Such vibrant colors. Both pieces fit my interpretation of the the color field concept.
My comments echo those above... I am especially liking the bottom one.. for the challenge. But, I love the top one! It probably isn't Color Field... but what do I know! ha
I really like the top piece. Either you live someplace warm OR you did those pieces last summer. I think the way you cut the squares and arranged them makes for a very strong design.

I like the bright intense colors you achieved. The orange background seems to be perfect. You made some really interesting textures in that quilt.

The fabric and colors are beautiful in that first. However, I'm going to go against the grain here and say that the block of orange negative space in the center really bothers me. I feel like something is missing. If I'm the only one feeling that, though, maybe it's just me?

Thanks for all the comments. I wasn't sure about the orange space in the center at first either. The original version had fabric squares inserted into the center but it was very predictable. It didn't have any tension and I didn't like it until I removed the center. I think I may quilt four smaller squares in the center and each will have lines similar to the shapes in the fabric. I'm hesitating though because texture is not in the color field style.
I keep on coming back to the first piece..and love it. The dyes made the softness necessary and the brightness of the piece and the color choices are just wonderful.
