Sunflowers

10" x 12"

I didn't think I would have time to participate this month...but in the middle of the night I remembered I had started a still life of sunflowers in a vase some time ago. I immediately got up, found it and cropped it within an inch of its life. Great fun! A little thread painting for shadows and some quilting the next day and it was done.

Wonderful resourcefulness, and a great result. The thread painting was an excellent way to add dimension to the pot.

Isn't it wonderful when you find something partly done that you can use?

Great job.

Cynthia,
I love the extreme cropping and the intimate, close up feeling it gives. It's like the vase of sunflowers is peeking out at you. The borders on two sides only gives it a unique look from what you usually see on quilts and art, it makes it more interesting and I believe makes you look longer at it. The black background is somewhat unexpected with the almost pastel subject, but it works well. I also like the orange dots in the black background. They have movement and rhythm and the small size pattern adds depth and variety in scale. I couldn't really think of anything to change, so I just tried to give my observations, which are somewhat different.

Actually no, here is something to consider: Roberta put a small orange rectangle on her background wall, and something like that, kind of tucked behind the sunflowers (although since it's already finished, you would have to cut it out, a daunting task) to suggest a painting on the wall might look interesting.
