Time to Mend
7 1/4" x 6 7/8"
cottons, tissue lame, wrong side of satin
cotton/rayon/metallic thread
This is definitely the smallest quilt I've ever done! Also this was the most difficult challenge so far for me to do. I have quite limited experience with drawing; I chose some difficult ffabrics to work with; this was my first attempt at building a picture with Wonder-Undered pieces onto a pattern; and my first cropping. The edges are finished with satin stitch.
I certainly learned a lot and am happy with the results.

Hi Sally.
I think you did a great job with shading and shadowing and with your composition. I think the second detail photo shows how the piece would also really have "popped" if cropped in that manner, but either way, I think it's great.

Brenda--
If I had cropped it down that much, it would have been so small that I could have easily lost it in my studio! The cropping in this case was done after the applique work was completed.
My very first impression was that it was a boat on a pink sea, but it only took a couple more seconds to know that it was indeed a tape dispenser.
Similar in several ways to Carol Claspers paper boat from the last challenge. I had to look back and see if you were the one who made paper boat.
Great dimension and colors.
I like how you have turned a still life into a simple narrative. What if there was writing on the paper? That could strengthen the narrative part of your quilt. It would give the paper a better reason to be mended.
Sally, I knew it was a tape dispenser (what a tough item to depict!) immediately since you did such a great job! I especially like the transparency fo the tape. I agree with Brenda on the cropped image with more dynamite.

Hi Sally,
This is a clever composition with great shading and interesting textures. Love the complementary colors of yellow-green and red-violet, too.

Sally,
Although the cropped detail image is very engaging, I really like the shape of the shadow and how the paper is torn in the original. They're both wonderful compositions. The quilting and color choices are also great. I wonder if you had used some transparent fabric or if you put a piece of very light green over the part of tape that stretches over the green dispenser would make it look even more like clear tape.
