Five o'clock shadow

This is a picture I took of a curbside gardens shadow on the cement in the late afternoon. I pieced the cement with linen and stiched all the lines for accent. The shadow is organza all cut as one piece. I used shiva sticks for accent. The leaves are green batiks and the little flowers are thread painted on. I had quite a quandry as to whether or not to do more quilting but decided I needed to leave it as flat as possible to accentuate the idea of a flat shadow. I love comments and suggestions. Thank you Cynthia for a thought provoking challenge.

This really intrigues me. It is such an original and unique idea.

Lovely job with interpretation and the quilting.

Wow Pat, this is so real it makes me want to get my weed whacker! The play of the shadow on the pavement really adds excitement to the piece and is very effective. I think you really got the feel this challenge was looking for.

Hi Pat: I really love how large the shadow is relative to the plant and how you offset the foreground subject matter to the left of the composition. The lines in cement are also very effective and seem to bring your eye into the piece. WOW!!!!

This is a "Wow" piece for me, primarily because of the unexpected perspective. The simplicity of the shadow grabs your eye first and then you are drawn in to see what is casting that shadow. Well done!

Pat.. this is quite an awesome piece... cleverly tackled and executed. The only suggestion I have is... it doesn't need a border that wide. It would knock your socks off if it was simply bound in a narrow black binding... narrow to echo the cement joins. Or, wrap it on a canvas frame.

This is mesmerizing. The shadow looks so real. I love it.

Thanks for all your comments. I will try a smaller binding and see how it looks.

I agree with the others. Wonderful perspective. Great use of contrast in both light and size.

Absolutely stunning. This really grabbed my attention. I wanted to know "what is that?" You have certainly captured the magic of shadows as well as nailing the challenge. Bravo!

Yes, try out a smaller border or not border at all, previewing in Photoshop and see if you don't think its a stronger piece.

I adore this - but I've taken to shadow portraits lately. I've wondered how they would translate to a quilt - now I know.

Hi Pat, nothing to say, but AWESOME! I wouldn't change a thing, except the quilting in the background. I would probably quilt the background heavily either in 2 colors in values to match the background or one color like a light-medium gray. But that's me..I like alot of background quilting.
I can't believe the growth you have shown this last year, Pat...you have turned into a real artist!
