Bloc de couleur

I took the challenge very literally and painted on fabric. I drew the design out first on paper and then transferred it onto multi-purpose fabric. I thought about stitching over the paint, but don't know if that will take from it or add to it. The dimensions are 11-1/2" X 16". I have posted two versions of this and as you can see it doesn't matter which version you look at, it will look like that is the right way, but the first one on the left is the way I see it should be.

Really nice! I think this would fit right in with the original color field painters. I really like your choice of color palette - It reminds me of the 1920's and '30's art for some reason, particularly Bauhaus textiles - look at this: http://justpatchwork.blogspot.com/2008/05/bauhaus.html.

Deborah, I also believe this piece is evocative of some of the color field painters and prefer your vertical orientation of the work. The colors you have chosen remind me of a couple of Kandinsky's works as well. Regarding quilting, perhaps you could consider echo quilting some, but definitely not all, of the shapes. Or perhaps some carefully placed hand stitching that performs the function of connecting the three layers without being really heavy quilting. This is a great piece. I hope you will finish it.

This is a very nice place. The choice of colors is pleasing to the eye. I like the choice of the circles which move the eye through the piece and also provide some tension. The painting of it also gave an illusion of layers or transparency. I also like the vertical placement because for me when viewing it that way there is no foreground or background to the piece, just a whole unit.

Hi Deborah, Do you happen to like the work of the painter Paul Klee? Because this has a similiar feel with the color blocks and shapes. He is one of my favorites and your piece immediately grabbed me in the same way. Very expressive use of color in a sophiscated way. The shading and muted colors are perfect. Great job!

PS...I like the vertical orientation best. On the quilting...I do think the stitching could enhance it. I've quilted painted quilts and they turn out great. You might have to spray it with water after quilting to close the needle holes.

This is superb! I like the circles against the geometric and the colors are great. Yes.. a Paul Klee influence?
I am looking forward to seeing it quilted... yes, please...

Very cool. I disagree with not stitching. The stitching would add some more depth to the piece.

Overall, I like this piece, however, the light blue rectangle is considerably lighter in value than the other colors and therefore draws my eye right to that area and I get stuck there.

Very nicely done...I love the play of the round shapes against the rectangular shapes. I am a real sucker for these colors so I shouldn't comment. :)
